Look, you tell me Leonardo DiCaprio, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep and a host of others will be in a movie together written and directed by Adam Mckay? I was 1000% invested even before a trailer was released. Below, I share my thoughts on Netflix’s upcoming film, Don’t Look Up.

Adam McKay’s transition into a more satirical comedy centered around real topics has been nothing short of remarkable. First, we saw it with The Big Short and the housing market. Next, we saw it with Vice and Vice President Cheney, and now we see him tackle climate change with Don’t Look Up on Netflix.

McKay does an incredible job of dumbing things down while also telling us how screwed we are as a country. The movie is political but also shows both sides of the fence. He has this marvelous way of blending the two and make you laughing while you are terrified for your life in the back of your head. He is one of the best writers in Hollywood right now.

The Don’t Look Up ensemble cast is brilliant

Another fantastic performance by Leonardo DiCaprio leads the star-studded cast. But, my goodness, was it great to see Jennifer Lawrence back on the big screen because she is a knockout actress. The rest of the cast was strong, from Cate Blanchett to Meryl Streep to Rob Morgan to Timothee Chalamet, and the list goes on and on as the ensemble was brilliant. Easily one of the best of the year.

Personally, my MVP of the film was Jonah Hill. He plays the son of Meryl Streep, who is president of the United States. As I mention above, a blend of comedy and horror is the film’s tone, and McKay uses Hill as the comedic villain. So every time we heard them go into detail about how awful what’s happening is, Hill would come in with comedy relief. I would love to see the Academy recognize Hill for his work in this film.

Technical speaking, the film is a masterclass in art. From the insane editing used as its own character to Nicholas Britell giving us one of the year’s best scores to the brilliant way the movie was shot, this movie truly has it all. Also, Ariana Grande and Kid Cudi’s song in the film is BRILLIANT!

Overall, Don’t Look Up is one of the (if not the best) movies of the year. Adam McKay delivers in the most significant way yet, with a cast that genuinely has you eating out of the palm of their hands.

P.S. You need to see both post-credit scenes. There is one during the credits and one at the end of the credits.

Don’t Look Up hits theaters on Dec. 10, 2021, and comes to Netflix on December 24, 2021.
