Every year, Christmas movies run round the clock on cable television, and you’re liable to catch a film you used to love and haven’t watched in years. Since you can only watch Christmas movies once a year (presumably, but you do you), this annual rediscovery of past favorites is kind of what the season is all about. The Polar Express is one of those movies you forget during the year, but once you get wrapped into the adventure, you’ll believe in the holiday magic all over again.

Based on the children’s book of the same name by Chris Van Allsburg, The Polar Express reunited Tom Hanks with director Robert Zumeckis, who helmed Forrest Gump and Cast Away. Hanks lends his iconic voice to a number of characters, including Santa Claus and the conductor of the titular train. The film follows a young boy who takes a journey of self discovery when he climbs aboard a train headed for the North Pole.

The Polar Express opened in 3D during the 2004 holiday season and received an impressive worldwide gross of $310 million. The film didn’t totally win over critics, as its Rotten Tomatoes score sits at 55%. Nevertheless, The Polar Express has seen a second life on TV. Since its release, the film has become a Christmastime staple, and it’s a wonder that in this era of reboots, revivals, and remakes that one of the greatest Christmas movies hasn’t received a live-action update. Where’s Santa when you need him?
