Every year during Christmastime, one person gets all the hype: Santa Claus. But there’s someone else we need to look out for: the Grinch. He’s a mean one, but he’s also quite funny, and he makes a fun Christmas movie. Based on Dr. Suess’ 1957 book of the same name and the 1966 animated television special, Ron Howard’s adaptation of How the Grinch Stole Christmas starring comedic force Jim Carrey will never fall from its perch as one of the greatest Christmas movies of all time.

Carrey absolutely transforms himself into the Grinch and disappears into this evil, green creature dead set on wreaking havoc on Whoville on Christmas. In an act of bitter revenge, the Grinch decides to have some fun on Christmas and sneak around Whoville to steal all signs of the holiday. He takes presents, lights, trees, everything he can get his hairy green fingers on. But the Grinch’s plan hits a snag when he meets the sweet and innocent Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen) and his heart grows three sizes.

Even though How the Grinch Stole Christmas holds a middling 53% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film was a hit at the box office, bringing in over $345 million worldwide against a monster budget of $123 million. Also, the film won the Academy Award for Best Makeup, while Jim Carrey rightfully earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance. In 2018, the film received an animated reboot titled The Grinch, but nothing can top the original remake classic, which almost 20 years later maintains its show-stopping sensory extravagance.
