24. Eight Crazy Nights

Release Year: 2002
Directed By: Seth Kearsley
Starring: Adam Sandler, Jackie Titone, Alison Krauss, Austin Stout, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealon, Norm Crosby, Jon Lovitz

Leave it to Adam Sandler to create an animated Hanukkah movie. Eight Crazy Nights might be one of the most crass holiday-themed movies out there. Be forewarned that much of its blue humor is derived from stereotyping, and its tone won’t do much to lift your holiday spirits. But in 2002, Eight Crazy Nights fit right in with Sandler’s body of work.

Eight Crazy Nights features the voice of Adam Sandler as 33-year-old hot mess Davey Stone, who can’t seem to kick his habit of getting drunk and getting in trouble with the law. Thanks to the intervention of 70-year-old volunteer basketball referee Whitey Duvall (also Sandler), Davey’s sentence is reduced to community service for a youth basketball league. Now Davey must contend with Whitey’s attempts to improve him. These will surely be the eight craziest nights of Davey’s life.

As is tradition with Adam Sandler movies, Eight Crazy Nights did not inspire holiday generosity from critics. The film rests comfortably with a 12% on Rotten Tomatoes. And its $23.8 million worldwide gross isn’t impressive, either. But Sandler movies aren’t always popular with everyone. Eight Crazy Nights probably doesn’t hold up well in 2018, but if you’re willing to take the gamble, you’ll surely get a few solid laughs from the cult favorite.
