Best Netflix shows and movies of 2021: No. 10 Tick, Tick… Boom!

Before Rent, Jonathan Larson was just a struggling film composer who worked as a waiter at the Moondance Diner in New York City. Larson was extremely talented, but he struggled to break through in the industry. Tick, tick… Boom! is the autobiographical rock musical that chronicles Larson’s journey to make it in the industry and how his life affects those he cares about around him.

Directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda, this musical drama includes a tremendous leading performance by Andrew Garfield as Larson. Alexandra Shipp, Vanessa Hudgens, Robin de Jesús, and Bradley Whitford round out the supporting cast. If you’re a fan of Rent, you will appreciate the Bohemian themes and rock compositions that are present throughout tick, tick… Boom!

Best Netflix shows and movies of 2021: No 11 The Power of the Dog

The streamer has a viable Oscar contender for Best Picture with The Power of the Doga Western drama starring Benedict Cumberbatch. In the film, Cumberbatch plays a toxic cowboy who is particularly cruel to his brother’s new wife and child, until a shocking revelation changes everything. Featured actors in the cast include Jesse Plemons as the aforementioned brother, Kirsten Dunst as the new wife, and Kodi Smit-McPhee as the son.

The film is written and directed by Jane Campion, who is one of seven women to be nominated for Best Director at the Oscars. Campion will most likely become the first two-time female directing nominee at this year’s ceremony.
