Spider-Man: No Way Home movie review: The best comic book movie ever
By Ricky Valero
I had the opportunity to see the last film of the year that had me genuinely excited, and today, I share with you my thoughts on Spider-Man: No Way Home. Folks have no fear, there are no spoilers here.
Over the years, Spider-Man has risen the ranks on my list of favorite comic-book characters in films. He is neck and neck with Batman these days. I LOVED Homecoming and Far From Home, and my hype for this film was tempered, but also massive.
As good as Far From Home was, I was scared of how they would top themselves with No Way Home. However, Marvel’s team does it again. Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote the best Marvel script we have seen yet. The emotional layers they brought to the film were something I wasn’t expecting. I found myself whipping tears from my eyes several times throughout this journey. Another massive thing that worked was their ability to intertwine this multiverse in a way that didn’t feel forced but grounded and important.
Spider-Man: No Way Home reminds us that with great power comes great responsibility
No matter how many times we’ve heard this quote throughout the Spider-Man films, I don’t think we have had any of the previous Spidey’s filled with as much expectation as Tom Holland. He was brought into a world filled with giant superheroes and Holland had the next phase start on his back. As a result, Holland has not only cemented himself as the best Spider-Man, but he has also cemented his place in the history of all-time great Comic Book characters ever.
Nobody and I mean nobody, has added such a raw and emotional layer to their role the way he has in this universe. I have been so impressed with every aspect of what he has brought to this part. He delivers time and time again and we need to recognize that.
We’ve come to expect great action sequences within the MCU and they didn’t disappoint. So several sequences throughout this film are so cool, including ones with Doctor Strange, Doctor Ock, and Green Goblin. It was a visual spectacle that I will not soon forget.
The supporting cast is so good. From Zendaya being the perfect MJ to Marisa Tomei (I love you) being the perfect May to Jacob Batalon being the comedic charm we need with Ned, they all bring something to the table that adds to the story and its amazing.
I remember talking about the Eternals and calling it the best-made movie in the MCU and I stand by that statement because it was that good. BUT, best made and best movie is two different things. I have a soft spot in my heart for Avengers: Endgame as it was that culmination film, but No Way Home is the best Marvel movie ever and dare I say, the best comic book movie of all time.
Spider-Man: No Way Home hits theaters on Dec. 16, 2021.
