9. Andrew DeLuca from Grey’s Anatomy

When the death happened: Grey’s Anatomy Season 17, Episode 7. The episode aired on Thursday, March 11, 2021.

Was the death expected? This was definitely not one of those expected deaths. We didn’t even realize that there was a death to come in the episode. Of course, there were always risks, but we thought everyone was going to make it out alive.

We knew DeLuca had put himself at risk going after the female sex trafficker. However, Carina went with him, refusing to let him drive off alone. With Carina there, we thought that meant something positive. That DeLuca would be safe. The episode took a very fast and devastating turn of events.

Why it was one of the best TV deaths of 2021: The shock element certainly helped. We could feel the pain the other characters felt, especially Carina. Plus, this death managed to give Carina something much deeper in the episodes of Station 19 to follow.

However, it was the scene with Meredith on the coma beach that made this stand out. DeLuca and Meredith shared a beautiful moment. DeLuca could have potentially chosen to head back to his own body, but he chose to move on. His mom called him from across the beach, and he just couldn’t resist. Getting to see mother and son reunite in the afterlife was beautiful. It also meant we didn’t have to relive things with anyone telling Meredith what happened since she remembered a bit of the coma beach.
