I will admit I am not a Shakespearan by any means, but my level of excitement seeing The Tragedy of Macbeth was super high. You can’t have a film with such a star-studded cast coming out around award season and it be a dud.

I often say that Denzel Washington is the greatest actor ever to do this. We have seen Washington in so many different roles and that is what always stood out with his filmography. I am sure that tackling this iconic figure in Lord Macbeth wasn’t easy, but as he always does, Mr. Washington reminds us that he is the GOAT.

Shakespeare is that poetic, fast-talking, quick-witted dialogue that you have to be on when you are acting within these words. Throughout this journey, the conversation is substantial, but the actors that bring these words to life engulf us into the world of Macbeth.

Washington has the perfect counterpart in Academy-Award winner Frances McDormand. Of course, we all know how good she is, but the real treat is us getting to watch these two powerhouses come together and deliver Shakespeare. Writer and director Joel Cohen brilliantly allows these two actors do what they do best and it is beautiful to watch. I was mesmerized by these two.

Denzel Washington gives the best performance of the year in The Tragedy of Macbeth

The movie isn’t going to be accessible to everyone. I am not a Shakespeare person, as I mentioned. Still, I found myself in love with Cohen’s script, direction, and breathtaking cinematography while watching the movie in the 4:3 ratio it was shot in. He did an excellent job of letting us be within the fear of these characters and letting these actors bring this world to light.

If you are wondering about Oscar chances for the film, Denzel Washington gives the best performance I’ve seen this year. There are several scenes where he delivers STRONGLY.

The Tragedy of Macbeth hits theaters on Christmas Day and comes to Apple TV+ on Jan. 14, 2022.
