There are some great movies to watch across the various streaming platforms. We’re taking a look at the top HBO Max movies to watch, whether you’re interested in a romantic comedy, a thriller, or something in between.

This list is in alphabetical order. After all, how can we possibly compare the genres?

6 must-watch HBO Max movies on New Year’s Eve 2021

Chicago

We start with a musical movie that is thoroughly entertaining. I challenge you not to get the songs stuck in your head even just reading the name of the movie.

Renee Zellwegger stars as a woman who shoots her husband. She ends up in a women’s prison in the 1930s with other women looking to get out of jail after committing similar offenses. Catherine Zeta Jones’s character is also in jail for the same crime and they both have the same lawyer. If both want to get free, they need to one-up each other to remain in the public eye.

New Year’s Eve

If you love Love, Actually, you’ll enjoy the way New Year’s Eve tells the story. This is another one of those movies that focuses on an ensemble of characters as they navigate love and friendships during this time of the year.

Halle Berry, Lea Michele, Katherine Heigl, and Robert De Niro all star in this movie. It’s not as good as the Christmas movie that started off these types of movies, but it’s still entertaining while waiting for the ball to drop.

Sex and the City

Want to follow the lives of four female friends finding love and themselves in the bustling city of New York? Sex and the City is the best option, and both movies are on HBO Max right now.

The great thing about this is you’ve also got the original series. And don’t forget the new revival that picks up years after the movies finished.

The Muppets Take Manhattan

You want something for the kids on New Year’s Eve, right? This is where the next of the HBO Max movies comes into play. The Muppets Take Manhatten is a fun movie for the entire family.

The Muppets have graduated college and move to Manhattan to become Broadway stars. Of course, there is always a con man who forces the Muppets to go their separate ways. That is except Kermit the Frog who doesn’t want to see any of them give up on their dreams. He wants to reunite the gang and take over Manhattan as they originally planned.

The Truman Show

If you want a comedy, Jim Carey won’t let you down. The Truman Show remains on of his best. Not only do we have the comedy, but there are some serious moments throughout that show how he could have been a serious actor.

The series follows Truman, a man who doesn’t realize he is the star of his own TV series. As he starts to learn the truth, he looks for a way out of the world to get answers from those who put him there.

Waiting to Exhale

Finally, it’s one all about women supporting women. Waiting to Exhale is the 1995 movie starring Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine, Whitney Houston, and Lela Rochon. They are four friends who will help each other through the ups and downs of their relationships.

Two of the women are the “other woman” in their relationships and think their partners will leave their wives for them. One of them has been divorced by a man who wants to be with his mistress. The fourth finds love with a new neighbor.
