We have done it, folks, as we have made it through another crazy wild ride of a year. So, as we sit here and reflect on the year that was, we share the best new movies to watch in theaters and films available on streaming services that you don’t want to miss.

While most of us will spend our time counting down the days to watch the ball drop, some will be searching for movies to pass the time until the parties begin. With that being said, the movie theaters aren’t releasing any new attractions, but we will share some of the leftover movies from the massive weekend of Christmas releases.

From the Dec. 22-25 we saw seven brand new movies hit the theaters and quite a bit more get released in limited theaters. I would say this is the biggest reason why we have no big releases this weekend. So unless you spent the last week in a movie theater, we got some movies for you to check out.

New movies to watch in theaters this weekend

  • Licorice Pizza
  • Sing 2
  • American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story
  • A Journal for Jordan
  • The King’s Man
  • Spider-man: No Way Home

Paul Thomas Anderson is regarded as one of Hollywood’s best working writers and directors. We have seen his work from Boogie Nights to Phantom Thread to There Will Be Blood. His craft is remarkable. He returns with a coming-of-age story that follows Alana Kane (Alana Haim) and Gary Valentine (Cooper Hoffman) as they fall in love in California.

New movies to stream from home this weekend

  • The Lost Daughter (Netflix)
  • Don’t Look Up (Netflix)
  • The Matrix Resurrections (HBO Max)
  • Encanto (Disney+)
  • Being the Ricardos (Amazon Prime Video)
  • Yearly Departed (Amazon Prime Video)
  • New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash premieres (Parmount+)

If you would like to prepare yourself for Oscar season, I recommend checking out Netflix’s The Lost Daughter. It is the directorial debut of Maggie Gyllenhaal in a film that stars Olivia Colman, Dakota Johnson and Ed Harris. The film has big-time award aspirations and I expect them to come true.
