The Gilded Age maturity rating: Why is the HBO series rated TV-MA?

The Gilded Age is all anyone is talking about these days as this HBO Max series has taken the world by storm.

Not only is the show a remarkable look at the complexities and the dynamics of late 19th-century New York, but it also takes a marvelous dive into the power plays at work during this time when new money was making its way into the state and old money refused to step out. However, the most amazing aspect of this new release is the unique way in which it blends all this together, paying homage to many period pieces before it but still standing on its own.

We could go on for hours about what makes this series worth watching, but you truly have to see it for yourself to understand. Before you do that, though, read on to learn whether or not you can view The Gilded Age with younger period drama lovers or if you should watch by yourself.

The Gilded Age maturity rating

As of today, HBO Max has given The Gilded Age a TV-MA maturity rating meaning it is not suitable for audiences under 18-years-old.

At face value, the series doesn’t appear to be inappropriate for younger viewers, but as one dives deeper into the series, you may likely see a fair amount of instances where strong language, intense or uncomfortable topics, and/or suggestive scenes can be seen/heard.

In knowing all this, you may prefer to watch something similar but more age-appropriate in nature. If that’s the case, then Lincoln, Cabaret, and The Great Gatsby on the streaming service are perfect substitutions. And, of course, the beloved 2005 historical drama Pride & Prejudice is always a great watch for the family.
