The Woman in the House is a strong but unpolished dramedy

The first time I saw the name of the Netflix show we are reviewing today, I laughed because I thought it was the longest title in the history of any series. So today, I review The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window.

Most series decide to reel you in with the big bang and slowly let the story unfold in the episodes that follow. But, with The Woman in the House, the writers let us get to know Anna (Kristen Bell), who she is, and decided to place tiny subtle things about her that set us up for the big story a few episodes later.

I am a big fan of Kristen Bell’s work and without her fantastic work as Anna, the series wouldn’t be as great as it is. We have a woman who is still reeling and grieving the loss of her child. Anna doesn’t know how to adapt to life, so she consumes herself in other people’s business (and drinking A LOT of wine) which causes quite the uproar. Bell does a fantastic job of playing an unhinged, subtle, yet seductive woman in this murder mystery.

The Woman in the House is great fun, but loses audiences in the ending

However, let’s talk about the ending of the show and how downright stupid it is. The Woman in the House is the second show (Clickbait being the other) that I enjoyed, but that I feel the end ruins the entire season. I’m so like, why? They try to be cute? I simply can’t understand why they decided to go this route.

While I loved the writing because it was the perfect blend of comedy and whodunit crime show that equally had you laughing and guessing what was really going on,I felt it was missing something to really stand out as a great show. Instead, it comes off more like a one-season binge that I will forget about weeks later.

The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window comes to Netflix on Friday, Jan. 28.
