Is Bringston on All American: Homecoming a real university?
By Sabrina Reed
Bringston University was first introduced in All American season 3. The historically Black institution, located in Atlanta, is known for its excellence. However, in the backdoor pilot for All American: Homecoming, the school was dragged into a baseball scandal that shook its standing in the sports world.
When we’re brought back to campus, it’s a new school year. Freshman are arriving in droves to start their college careers and jump start their lives in a place new to some and home to others.
While the focus of All American: Homecoming is primarily on tennis and baseball, the show will also touch on topics of Greek life, college level sports in general, university specific coming-of-age moments from serious life choices to romance, and how a school’s backbone of honor doesn’t necessarily keep public figures and students from making poor decisions for themselves and their community.
The gravitas that Bringston’s name evokes in the series speaks to the traditions and legacy bolstered by historically Black colleges and universities. However, the reverence with which the university is written about isn’t due to having a real life counterpart but rather respect for the institutions of higher learning that it emulates.
Is Bringston University a real college?
Bringston University doesn’t exist, but Atlanta is home to more than one HBCU. The most known to the general public are Morehouse and Spelman College which belong to the Atlanta University Center, a consortium comprised of the aforementioned schools and Clark Atlanta University and Morehouse School of Medicine.
Infused in All American: Homecoming‘s storytelling is the importance of HBCUs to the students who attend them, the alumni who continue to pour into the schools’ legacies, and their place in American history. As the series progresses we’re likely to learn about any surrounding HBCUs in the Atlanta area of this universe including any rivalries both on the field/courts and off.
