The last few times we’ve seen Andrew Garfield on the big (and small) screen, he was reprising his role as one of three Peter Parkers in Spider-Man: No Way Home, playing televangelist Jim Bakker in The Eyes of Tammy Faye, and portraying Jonathan Larson in the Netflix biographical musical drama, tick, tick…BOOM! But with the recent teaser trailer for FX’s limited series, Under the Banner of Heaven, it looks as if we’re going to be getting a darker version of the actor.

The upcoming series is based on the true crime novel by Jon Krakauer. Under the Banner of Heaven will follow Detective Pyre (Andrew Garfield): a family man and devout member of the Latter-day Saints who begins to question the teachings of the Church after coming into contact with a suspected murderer. Through the investigation, Detective Pyre’s faith is put to the test, as the connections between the victim and the Mormon Church become undeniable.

Where can you watch Under the Banner of Heaven?

Although FX shows like Atlanta and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are available to watch on the network as well as Hulu the next day, Under the Banner of Heaven will be available exclusively on Hulu. Although an exact premiere date is still not known, the limited series is scheduled to be released on April 28, exclusively on Hulu.

Aside from Andrew Garfield playing the lead, Under the Banner of Heaven has assembled a pretty stellar ensemble cast. Sam Worthington, Denise Gough, Wyatt Russell, Billy Howle, Gil Birmingham, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, Seth Numrich, Chloe Pirrie, Sandra Seacat and Christopher Heyerdahl will all have roles in the limited series.

Could Under the Banner of Heaven be the next True Detective? Time will tell. But with Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black (Milk, When We Rise) at the helm, and acclaimed filmmakers Isabel Sandoval (Apparition, Lingua Franca) and David Mackenzie (Hell or High Water, Perfect Sense) set to direct, the limited series is certainly in good hands.
