New series, The Thing About Pam, premiered recently on March 8. The show is a crime drama based on the real-life events detailing the involvement of Pam Hupp in the 2011 murder of Betsy Faria.
The series has big names attached to it including Renée Zellweger who plays Pam Hupp, a self-appointed businesswoman arrested for the murder of Betsy Faria. Katy Mixon plays Betsy Faria, the murder victim and Russ Faria’s wife. Glenn Fleshler takes on the role of Russ Faria, and Josh Duhamel is his defense attorney.
When Betsy Faria is murdered in her small-town in Missouri, police believe her husband Russ is the one behind the incident. He’s arrested and found guilty. But eventually evidence later reveals that it was her close friend Pam who did it.
The limited series was given a six-episode order. The first three episodes are now available to watch.

The real-life murder story garnered a lot of media attention at the time. It was also featured on several episodes of Dateline NBC. A popular 2019 podcast, “The Thing About Pam,” is one of the most downloaded podcasts on iTunes.
The show has only received a 48% ranking on Rotten Tomatoes based on 23 reviews, and a 32% audience score according to 34 viewers. Though it’s a very serious topic, the series took a more comedic approach to it. This may be why some people don’t enjoy it.
In general, I like television shows that are based on real-life events. Of course, there are parts that are dramatized for the sake of TV, but it hits different when you know it’s based on a true story. Taking a more comedic approach to something that was so gruesome and upsetting probably wasn’t the way to go.
