Minx on HBO Max: Was Minx Magazine a real thing?
One of HBO Max’s most fun series of the year is currently streaming, and if you’re into sexy comedies, you need to check it out! Minx premiered on March 17, 2022, and airs two new episodes every Thursday. The show is set in the 1970s and follows a feminist writer named Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond) who wants to do something bigger with her life.
With the help of an adult magazine publisher named Doug (Jake Johnson), Joyce sets off to launch the very first erotic mag just for women, hoping this can allow her to write think pieces about the issues women really deal with. She befriends her new co-workers, gets closer to her sister Shelly (Lennon Parham), and even starts sleeping with one of the magazine’s male models, Shane (Taylor Zakhar Perez).
It’s been a whirlwind of new experiences for Joyce so far, and we can’t wait to see what the rest of the season has in store!
Is Minx based on a true story?
As Minx takes place in the 1970s and references some real-life events, including Burt Reynolds’ iconic nude centerfold from a 1972 issue of Cosmopolitan, many viewers have been wondering if the series is based on a true story. Others want to know whether or not the magazine Minx was a real thing.
Well, as cool as it would’ve been, the show is not based on a true story and Minx was not a real magazine of the ’70s. The series was created by Ellen Rapoport based on an original story. That said, however, there’s no doubt Minx was inspired by real-life events of the time. For instance, Screen Rant references the real-life magazine Suck and its co-founder, Germaine Greer, as a likely influence on the show.
