Sonic 2 is in theaters April 8 and fans are highly anticipating its arrival after the huge success of the first movie, which took the world by surprise. I’m sure I don’t need to remind anyone how the first design of our favorite blue speedster scared us half to death. Luckily, the redesign turned out amazing and the movie exceeded expectations. At the same time, this means that fan’s expectations for the first movie are super high. Does it live up to the hype? How does Sonic the Hedgehog 2 up the ante? This and more, in our advanced review, below. And don’t worry, there are no spoilers ahead!

As the trailers have teased, Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) is teaming up with Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) to stop a new and improved Robotnik (Jim Carrey). But Robotnik is not alone, either, he also has a partner in crime in Knuckles the Echidna, voiced by Idris Elba.

Knuckles is a scene stealer you’ll want to see more of, so it’s good to know he will be getting his own spin-off series soon. Elba as the voice of this naive yet tough character does not disappoint!

In Sonic 2, the race is on to retrieve the Master Emerald, which holds an unlimited power that can’t fall into the wrong hands. Those familiar with the video games can accurately predict the events as the movie goes on (as my overjoyed 5-year old did), but this isn’t to say the movie is either predictable or not exciting. On the contrary, it’s everything fans could have hoped for.

The sequel puts a stronger focus on Sonic, as well as its other animated characters, Tails and Knuckles, giving the latter two a very accurate portrayal of their video game and cartoon versions. Tails is clever, sweet, and extremely loyal. While Knuckles is also all about loyalty, but isn’t nearly as street-smart as Sonic.

Sonic 2 is approximately 2 hours and 2 minutes long, and I’ve seen a few critics complain about the time, but they must not be fans. Trust me, if my 5-year old can sit through this entire movie without complaining (and he’s a wild one), you and your family will be fine! There’s never a dull moment or a long scene of only dialogue that your child will get anxious during. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is action-packed, full of fun tunes, jokes and LOL-moments. I mean, this is Sonic, after all, do you think he’s going to be still and not entertain?

Sonic is a brilliant movie, and Sonic 2 has now solidified Sonic’s status as a successful and beloved franchise among kids and families. The movie is in theaters April 8, with screenings kicking off as early as the evening of April 7. Will you be watching the movie in theaters or wait for a streaming release?
