History buffs like me who enjoy period dramas, we’re in for a treat! Starz has shared all the details on its new series, Becoming Elizabeth.

The most recognizable, talked about, and iconic English queen is Elizabeth I. The new show tells the story of her younger years before she took the throne. Elizabeth Tudor was the daughter of King Henry VIII and his second wife Anne Boleyn.

There’s been so many movies and shows about the important queen, but I’m excited about Starz’s take on her story. The network certainly knows how to develop historical dramas. Just look at Outlander, The White Queen, and The Spanish Princess. They’re all amazing with great female leads! I don’t doubt this princess turned queen’s story will be the same.

Becoming Elizabeth release date

We won’t have to wait very long! Becoming Elizabeth is set to premiere on June 12. The series will be available to stream on the Starz app, all its streaming and on-demand platforms, and on StarzPlay at midnight ET. If you want to catch it on TV, then it will be available at 9 p.m. ET/PT in the U.S. and Canada.

In 2019 when the series was first greenlit by the network, Deadline reported there’s going to be a total of eight episodes. Anya Reiss created the show and also serves as an executive producer.

Becoming Elizabeth synopsis

Before ascending the throne Elizabeth I was Elizabeth Tudor, an orphaned teenager who became involved in the political and sexual politics of the English court. With the death of her father King Henry VIII and no clear heir, a scramble for power begins. Elizabeth and her siblings Edward and Mary find themselves pawns in a game for power.

Here’s the official synopsis from Starz:

"The world of “Becoming Elizabeth” is visceral, dangerous, and very bloody; a time in which every man or woman of the court is on the wheel of fortune, which may take them to a position of great power one moment, or the executioner’s block the next. Judgements are rendered quickly, and no one is safe."

Other than the three royal siblings, some notable characters will be Catherine Parr who is King Henry’s widow. Thomas Seymour, Edward’s uncle, quickly becomes her husband, but he takes an interest in Elizabeth. The Duke of Somerset is another to keep an eye on. He wastes no time taking up the position of Lord Protector when King Henry dies, according to Deadline.

Starz also shared the new series’ trailer. It tells us a young Edward takes up the throne after King Henry dies. We’re going to see how the court tries to divide the royal siblings, Elizabeth and Thomas’ romance, and the difficulties Elizabeth faces as a woman and princess of that time.
