Robert Pattinson will don his cape again for The Batman 2
By Sabrina Reed
Finally fans of Matt Reeves’ The Batman can rest easy! The sequel to the film starring Robert Pattinson in the titular role has been greenlit. The announcement came during Warner Bros. presentation at CinemCon on Tuesday, April 26.
Variety reports that Reeves was present to deliver the good news. He’ll be writing and directing the follow-up film that saw Bruce in his second year as Gotham’s defender. Pattinson has also been tapped to reprise his role.
While Reeves didn’t provide any details about the sequel’s plot, we do know that the planned spin-off series heading to HBO Max are likely to play a part in the overall story of this particular Batverse.
What does that mean for the story going forward? Here’s what we know!
What’s next in Reeves’ The Batman universe?
The untitled Penguin series that’ll see Colin Farell once again stepping into Oswald Cobblepot’s shoes is a direct sequel to The Batman. Details are still limited on this project, however, it’s clear that the Scarface-esque tale will center on Penguin’s rise due in large part to the power vacuum left behind by Carmine Falcone.
Given the loose premise of the above mentioned limited series, The Batman 2 could either take place during this time in Penguin’s story or in the aftermath of whatever mayhem that’s unleashed in Gotham on that series.
Also on deck is a horror series set at Arkham Asylum. The show, which is currently in development, has replaced the scrapped prequel series that would have focused on the Gotham Police Department. With these two shows in the pipeline, we could be thrust into an entirely different Gotham by the time we’re returned to Bruce’s side of this universe.
However, that’s okay. Reeves’ Batverse will unfold on both the small and the big screen, and we can’t wait to see where we’re taken next in this story!
