The Quest is a unique new series on Disney+ that is a hybrid of scripted and reality television. The show follows eight real-life teenagers (known on as Paladins) who encounter a variety of fantasy characters as they work through a series of challenges to fulfill a prophecy and save the kingdom of Everealm.

If The Quest sounds familiar, it’s because the series previously aired on ABC in 2015 for one season. The new show on Disney+ has been elevated and improved upon — with one major change being that the contestants are now all between the ages of 13-16, instead of being a group of adults.

Earlier this year at WonderCon in Anaheim, we spoke with an Executive Producer on The Quest, Elise Doganieri (co-creator of The Amazing Race) about why having a teenage group of contestants made the story more powerful. “You really see genuine and pure teenagers at a time in their lives when they might be… wondering about how they fit into the world,” she said. Over the course of the story, the increased confidence and change in the group is so much greater.

She explained that not only are the reality challenges seamlessly woven into the scripted storyline, but that each challenge also showcases the contestants’ individual strengths. “Whether they fail or succeed… there is growth, and there is inspiration for viewers to see what’s happening,” she said.

Can contestants be eliminated on The Quest?

Unlike most competition shows, The Quest will not eliminate any of the contestants, which the creative team feels will strengthen the story. “We wanted them to be able to experience every single challenge and every single creature because the story is so good,” Doganieri said. Because of not having elimination, the contestants are more supportive of another and stay immersed in Everealm as a group.

Doganieri is excited for audiences to root for the contestants on their journey and feel inspired by their stories. “[The Quest] is an outlet that’s positive and inspirational amongst all this the negative things that are happening in the world right now,” she said. “It’s a feel good show that’s exciting to watch because you don’t know what’s coming around the corner.”
