The Umbrella Academy season 3: All the details to know about the upcoming season

Based on the comics by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá, The Umbrella Academy‘s season 3 is highly anticipated, with fans across the world having waited almost two years since the last batch of episodes on Netflix! With the superpowered Hargreeves siblings last seen jumping back into 2019 after spending season 2 in the ’60s, they are faced with a warped version of the reality they once knew. So who can we expect in the new season, and when exactly is The Umbrella Academy season 3 coming out?

The new episodes of The Umbrella Academy will be coming to Netflix on Wednesday, June 22, of this year, with all ten being released to the streaming platform on the same day.

The Umbrella Academy season 2 recap

The second season of The Umbrella Academy continued on mere seconds from the first, where the Hargreeves siblings jumped back in time to the 1960s in order to avoid the apocalypse caused by younger sister Vanya. Taking place in Dallas, Texas, season 2 navigated each of the siblings’ various trials and tribulations after they are accidentally scattered across 1960-1963:

Luther works as a boxer and bodyguard for club owner Jack Ruby; Diego is locked in a mental institute with a plan to stop the JFK assassination he knows is coming; Allison (now married) is a civil rights activist with her husband; Klaus has become the tired leader of a fanatic cult (with Ben still rolling his eyes at Klaus’s every move); and Vanya finds herself an amnesiac on a small farm where she bonds and falls in love with housewife Sissy, and cares for her son Harlan. Five, having jumped further than the rest of his siblings, witnesses yet another apocalypse involving Soviet missiles, and desperately returns to gather up his siblings so they can prevent it.

Taking on The Handler and the Commission, their own father Reginald, a collection of Swedish assassins, and the FBI, the Hargreeves siblings battle enemies and themselves as they try to prevent the nuclear holocaust which they ultimately discover will be (once again) caused by Vanya’s seemingly uncontrollable power. As she is tortured and questioned by government agents who believe her to be a Russian spy, she is primed to blow, and it is this explosion which will lead to the apocalypse as it appears to be a Soviet attack. However, the siblings — primarily Ben, who sacrifices the remains of his ghostly life — are able to save Vanya and prevent the explosion. Although Diego is unable to stop the assassination of JFK, the world seems fairly back to normal.

This is until Sissy’s son Harlan (having accidentally absorbed some of Vanya’s explosive powers) becomes out of control in a whirlwind of energy. The Handler also returns to take out the Hargreeves children with the help of her superpower-mimicking adoptive daughter Lila (Diego’s friend and supposed ally from the mental institute). However, despite an onslaught of Commission agents, and all of Five’s siblings and Lila being shot and killed by The Handler (who is in turn killed by the last remaining Swedish assassin), there is hope. Five finally perfects his time traveling abilities to jump back just a few seconds, taking out The Handler before she even has a chance to shoot. Harlan is saved as Vanya reabsorbs her power and after some emotional goodbyes, all the siblings return back to 2019.

But things are not as they seem; the children find their father alive and well but unaware of who any of them are. They also find their deceased brother Ben to be alive, but not quite as they remember him, now a part of the so-called ‘Sparrow Academy’ that is clearly this new, altered timeline’s equivalent of the Umbrella Academy.

So who will be returning for the new season of the show? The main cast is looking to remain much the same, with the addition of the siblings’ alternates in the new timeline. There is also a significant change in that Number Seven/Vanya, will be coming out as transgender and transitioning within the show to become Viktor Hargreeves. This comes after many questions as to whether or not actor Elliot Page’s transition would be reflected in the show.

Arguably Christopher/Number Seven of the Sparrow Academy is one of the most awaited characters by fans, as he is supposedly portrayed by a literal telekinetic cube, and is treated like any other member of the family. This is perhaps an intentional mirroring of the Umbrella Academy’s cautiousness and sometimes mistreatment of their volatile youngest sibling Viktor.

The Umbrella Academy season 3 plot

Netflix has released its official description of the show’s third season, which will likely see the Umbrella Academy and the Sparrow Academy overcoming the odds and their differences in order to take down an unrevealed villain. The synopsis of the season states:

"“After putting a stop to 1963’s doomsday, the Umbrella Academy return home to the present, convinced they prevented the initial apocalypse and fixed this godforsaken timeline once and for all, but after a brief moment of celebration, they realize things aren’t exactly (okay, not at all) how they left them.Enter the Sparrow Academy. Smart, stylish, and about as warm as a sea of icebergs, the Sparrows immediately clash with the Umbrellas in a violent face-off that turns out to be the least of everyone’s concerns. Navigating challenges, losses, and surprises of their own – and dealing with an unidentified destructive entity wreaking havoc in the universe (something they may have caused).Now all they need to do is convince Dad’s new and possibly better family to help them put right what their arrival made wrong. Will they find a way back to their pre-apocalyptic lives? Or is this new world about to reveal more than just a hiccup in the timeline?”"

We’ll just have to wait until June to find out exactly what the two academies will be facing throughout the season…
