There Will Be Blood

I have called There Will Be Blood the most overrated film of recent time for quite a while. I remember watching it and being just bored to death. Over the years, I had a few people call me insane and tell me to rewatch it, and well, I did and here we are.

There Will Be Blood is a story of family, religion, hatred, oil, and madness in the early days of business. The film stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Paul Dano and Ciaran Hinds. Paul Thomas Anderson directed and adapted the screenplay from the book Oil!.

I’ve never been more floored by a dual of performances the way I was with Daniel Day-Lewis and Paul Dano. DDL is considered one of the greatest actors of all time, but he captivates you throughout this film with his body language, movement of his eyes to how he takes a puff of a cigarette. You cling to everything this man does. I am still blown away by how Paul Dano was left off the Best Supporting Actors list at the Oscars for his performance in this. It was an intense yet balanced performance as the oddball Christian.

The pace of this film is slow and I can understand watching and thinking it may bore you, but I promise that the slow burn of this film is incredibly calculated in how PTA builds that every payoff is worth it. There Will Be Blood is top-notch work from everyone involved. It’s a full-blown masterpiece.
