Do The Right Thing

Time after time, Spike Lee has shown us why he is one of the world’s best filmmakers. One of his best was one of his earliest films in Do The Right Thing.

Do The Right Thing follows the hottest day in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn, where everyone’s hate and bigotry are on the verge of exploding into violence. Spike Lee wrote and directed the film and stars next to Danny Aiello and Samuel L. Jackson.

I’ve always been a firm believer that if Spike Lee is talking, we as a collective whole need to listen. For many years, Spike made some incredible music videos and the way he made this music, tonally, is uniquely different and shares a powerful message. Spike does it like no other.

What’s even more impressive here is the fact that not only is Spike writing, directing, and producing, but he is also starring in front of the camera to bring his words to life. Of course, you also factor in the weight of what he is delivering, which only adds to how impressive this feat was.

The performances across the board were great, but Ossie Davis’s performance as Da Mayor stood out for me the most. He felt like the glue that kind of held the story together with his common sense of rationality. A lot of it comes from the pen of Spike, but Davis brings it to life.

If you haven’t watched Do The Right Thing, I can’t recommend the film enough. It’s a unique piece of filmmaking that tells an important message that everyone should hear.
