The Supernatural prequel spin-off The Winchesters is officially happening. What is the new CW series going to be about? Here’s all you need to know.

Supernatural is one of the most popular shows on The CW, yet it hasn’t been a successful franchise. There have been multiple attempts to bring a spin-off, and it’s only been after its 15-year run that we finally got something.

The Winchesters is officially happening at The CW. It will kick off Tuesday nights, and we knew from the pilot that it would be a prequel series. What exactly is this Supernatural series about, and is it going to be worth watching?

The Winchesters synopsis

From the beginning of the pilot creation, we learned that The Winchesters would follow John Winchester and Mary Campbell. It’s their epic love story told by Dean Winchester. Jensen Ackles will narrate the series.

The series takes us back to 1972, just after John returns from the Vietnam War. He’s trying to figure out who he is, and he also wants to know more about his dad, Henry Winchester. Henry left when he was a child, and he wants to figure out why.

He runs into Mary Campbell one night and finds out that the world of monsters exists. The 19-year-old demon hunter is also looking for her own father, who has gone missing on a hunt. John isn’t going to let her go off on her own, so he decides to get involved in the world of demon hunting. They’re joined by Mary’s friend Carlos and hunter-in-training Latika.

It’s time for both John and Mary to learn hidden secrets about their families. After all, Henry didn’t just leave because he wanted to. He had full intentions of returning, and we know what actually happened to him.

If you think that there are some changes to the Supernatural canon, you’ll be right. John didn’t find out about monsters and demons until after Mary’s death. Well, that’s what the show has always told us. He definitely knew nothing when Dean went back to the past and met his parents. So, how does he find out about demons and then forget? Is this an alternate world, or is this just a fantasy story that Dean is making up?

Here’s a look at the official The Winchesters synopsis from The CW:

"The Winchesters is the epic, untold love story of how John Winchester (Drake Rodger, The In Between) met Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly, American Housewife) and put it all on the line to not only save their love, but the entire world. When John returns home from fighting in Vietnam, a mysterious encounter sparks a new mission to trace his father’s past. In his journey, he crosses paths with 19-year-old demon hunter Mary, who is also searching for answers after the disappearance of her own father. Together, the two join forces with young hunter-in-training Latika (Nida Khurshid, Station 19) and easygoing hunter Carlos (Jonathan “Jojo” Fleites) to uncover the hidden truths about both their families. Their investigation leads them to a rare book emporium, whose owner Ada (Demetria McKinney, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne) takes an interest to the occult and could provide the missing pieces to their puzzle. But secrets run deep for both the Winchesters and Campbells, and despite the best efforts of John’s mother Millie (Bianca Kajlich, Legacies) to protect her son from pursuing a dangerous life of demon hunting, John and Mary are both determined to work together to uphold their families’ legacies while beginning to form a family of their own."
