So You Think You Can Dance returned this year after being off air since 2020 due to the pandemic. While we’re still not out of the throes of the coronavirus’ hold on the population, conditions have improved enough for the hit dance competition to return. Fans, however, were presented with a new panel of judges for season 17.
Stephen “tWitch” Boss, JoJo Siwa, and Matthew Morrison were tapped to evaluate the aptitude and skill level of the dancers who’ve stepped forward to compete in So You Think You Can Dance.
As an alum of the series, tWitch knows what it’s like to go through the rigors of the show and what it takes to stay competitive within it. He also has an eye for the unique and while training can carry a dancer through most things, there’s an innate sense of musicality and ability to perform that he primarily responds to regardless of how technical a dance might be.
Siwa is an Internet sensation who became a household name on Dance Moms and scorched the dance floor as runner-up on Dancing with the Stars last season. She’s passionate about dance as an art form and gravitates toward impeccable technique as well as the lines and shapes the body can make in motion.
Lastly, Morrison, as a theatre professional, is often looking for showmanship and a dancer’s ability to draw the audience into the performance. Having a spark is necessary to catch the viewer’s attention but talent must back that up. It’s what sets dancers apart. Due to a violation in protocol, Morrison was let go from So You Think You Can Dance, so fans will be awaiting the introduction of a new judge.
But, in the interim, we’ve turned our minds to past judges who’ve lent their critical eye to the competition in order to help foster the contestants’ talents and crown a winner. Here’s who’s judged the series over its run.
So You Think You Can Dance judges
With exception to season 17, Nigel Lythgoe has been the lone judge on So You Think You Can Dance to be on the judges panel every season. He created the series along with Simon Fuller, and has lent his expertise in the field as both a dancer and choreographer. Mary Murphy has had the second longest run as a judge for the competition. Other judges include:
- Mia Michaels
- Adam Shankman
- Paula Abdul
- Jason Derulo
- Vanessa Hudgens
- Laurieann Gibson
- Dominic “D-Trix” Sandoval
