When will Top Gun: Maverick go to streaming?

Released in theaters on May 27 over Memorial Day weekend, Top Gun: Maverick has become one of the most successful cinematic releases to date, grossing over $600 million worldwide so far. The film had showings in a total of 4,732 cinemas across North America alone on Memorial Day weekend, making it the record holder for the widest release of a movie yet.

Beyond the basic dollar numbers, Top Gun: Maverick has done very well with critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, Tom Cruise’s latest summer blockbuster has a Certified Fresh Critic rating of 97% and an audience rating of 99%. IMDb rates the movie in at 8.6 currently, while on Letterboxd, it has already broken through to its Top 250 Movies List at the 196 rank (two ranks above Orson Welles’s Citizen Kane, as a matter of fact).

All this craze and praise is perhaps to be expected. Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel film to the original 1986 smash hit Top Gun, which was the highest grossing film of that year. Combine that legacy with the current trend of remaking, rebooting, or just plain making a sequel out of old 80’s and 90’s property, and Top Gun: Maverick’s success may have been as sure a thing as betting on Michael Jordan (pre-baseball career).

As with the first film some 26 years ago, Paramount Pictures is handling the distribution for Top Gun: Maverick, making its arrival on Paramount+ a foregone conclusion. But when exactly will it be arriving? According to Rolling Stone, Paramount Pictures will be introducing Top Gun: Maverick to its streaming catalog on Paramount+ 45 days after its theatrical release. So, with a premiere date of May 27, that makes its streaming date July 11, 2022. Mark your calendars!
