Lightyear movie review: You have a friend in me…maybe?
By Ricky Valero
We have another big movie hitting theaters this weekend in Lightyear. Is it worth checking out in theaters or should you wait for the streaming release? I share my thoughts on the film, below.
We all know Andy loves Buzz, but why? Well, Lightyear is the movie that he watched that makes Andy fall in love with the character and want to have as one of his favorite toys. Look, call me crazy in this comparison, but I thought it was hilarious that one of the opening sequences to this film was eerily similar to Top Gun: Maverick. It’s like the second movie in two weeks (Jurassic World Dominion) that had moments that were not as big because of how incredible Top Gun: Maverick did them.
Let’s start by talking about the story and how it lacks consistency. Audiences are introduced to several characters early on, but we don’t get enough backstory or time to care about them. That said, I wasn’t emotionally invested when things happened to them. The story struggles with this mightily by not finding the balance between comedy and drama. The movie, at times, is hilarious, but when they try to go back to the dramatic side, they lost me completely. I didn’t care about the stakes, ever.
Lightyear’s Sox will be everyone’s favorite new Pixar character
However, speaking of funny, Sox will be EVERYONE’s favorite new Pixar character. Pixar veteran voice actor Peter Sohn is perfect in the role of Sox. I can’t tell you how many times I laughed because of something he said or did. He steals the show every time he’s on the screen, and you get excited to see Sox every time he appears. Another stand out from the film is Keke Palmer as Izzy Hawthorne. Out of any arc in the movie, Izzy’s was the best and only one I was even remotely emotionally connected to.
The big question is, how is Chris Evans as Buzz? I liked him, I’m not sure Evans adds anything out of the ordinary to the character, but he doesn’t hurt the character’s legacy, either.
Overall, Lightyear, while uneven, is a good time. With the funny moments and a breeze of a runtime, it has enough meat on the bone for parents and kids to enjoy this in theaters.
Lightyear hits theaters on Friday, June 17. The movie is expected to become available on Disney+ some time after its release.
