MasterChef: Back to Win, the twelfth season of the hit Fox cooking competition, kicked things off by putting these second chance contestants to the test. The first three episodes were spent weeding the chefs down to 20 hopefuls by pitting them against one another in a lightning round.

Two contestants have stood out from the beginning, though it hasn’t entirely been due to their skills in the kitchen. Shanika Patterson and Emily Hallock not only participated in MasterChef season 9 together, they have some bad blood between them. It’s a fact that was pointed out when they were competing to win their aprons to make it to the next leg of this season.

Why were the two women singled out? Here’s what we know!

What happened between Emily and Shanika on MasterChef?

According to Post Crescent, Hallock had been scorching her way through her opponents in MasterChef season 9 before she was eliminated. The chef was sent home after she decided not to opt-out of a “loser-goes-home challenge” when she could have saved herself.

Hallock chose up to go up against Patterson in a Black Forest cake challenge. Ultimately, she lost when her cake fell over in a blast freezer and she left the season in 10th place. The series is likely emphasizing the feud between her and Patterson because Hallock went out of her way to try to knock the other chef out of the competition. Hallock now views that decision as a mistake.

She said in the MasterChef: Back to Win premiere, “Last time I was here on season 9, I made a mistake that sent me home. That moment is something that I do think about often. Let’s just say if given the opportunity to save myself or try to send someone else home, I will be saving myself.”

We should note, however, that while the show likes to remind the audience of the history between both chefs, neither woman is trying to make that their legacy on the show. This second chance season gives them both the opportunity to redeem past mistakes, flex their strengthened skills, and take another shot at the MasterChef title.
