June 17 weekend movies: Every new movie in theaters and streaming this weekend

LIGHTYEAR, slated to open in theaters on June 17, 2022, is a sci-fi action-adventure and the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear (voice of Chris Evans)—the hero who inspired the toy. The film reveals how a young test pilot became the Space Ranger that we all know him to be today. © 2020 Disney/Pixar. All Rights Reserved.

Look, I am not saying every streaming platform has a movie coming out this week, but I am also not saying they don’t.

Below, we share the best new movies to watch in theaters and films available on streaming services that you won’t want to miss. I am blown away by the number of movies that are set to hit streaming platforms this weekend.

When I was going over the list of what movies to add to the list, I went over every single platform, found the ones coming out, and I kept adding to the list. It was never-ending. You’ll have plenty of options to choose from.

New movies to watch (and stream)

  • Lightyear, Theaters
  • Good Luck To You, Leo Grande, Hulu
  • Cha Cha Real Smooth, Apple TV+
  • Spiderhead, Netflix
  • Jennifer Lopez Halftime, Netflix
  • Jerry and Marge Go Large, Paramount+
  • Father of the Bride, HBO Max

The biggest release of the weekend is Lightyear. The film follows the origins of Buzz Lightyear and his adventures to infinity and beyond. Buzz will be voiced by Chris Evans. While I am a massive fan of the Toy Story franchise, I am not sure how I feel about this film. Could it work? Sure. Could it also be bad? Sure. I am intrigued to see where it goes, but one thing is for sure, Pixar has a great track record.

We have a pair of 2022 Sundance Film Festival movies set to come out this week in Good Luck To You, Leo Grande and Cha Cha Real Smooth. The first of which was one of my favorite films of the festival. The movie makes its Hulu premiere this weekend. Cha Cha Real Smooth was good but not great and it’s coming to Apple TV+. Both are easy watches that I think will end up being crowd-pleasers.

Another interesting film coming out this week that I knew nothing about until I looked up is Spiderhead. The Netflix film stars Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller and is set in the near future where convicts are offered a chance to volunteer as medical subjects for shortening their sentences. What could go wrong? Ha. I am intrigued but shocked not much has been said about the film.

What will you be watching this weekend? Will you enjoy a movie in theaters or streaming?
