1923: All the details on the new Yellowstone prequel spin-off series

Yet another Yellowstone prequel spin-off is in the works at Paramount+. The wildly successful franchise debuted1883–starring Sam Elliott, Tim McGraw, and Faith Hill–last year. Fans of the show were disappointed to learn that it was only meant to have a limited run on the streamer.

Taylor Sheridan, the creator of the Yellowstone universe, however, isn’t done telling the Duttons’ story in different time periods. While he’s left their origin story behind, at least in its 1883 era, the family’s history will be picked back up in1923. The series had previously been announced as1932 but has since shifted 9 years further into the past.

Taking place 40 years after1883, this new spin-off prequel not only takes place at a different point in American history but also in an entirely new century. As such, we expect the Duttons will have modernized to the times while also maintaining their brand of grit, salt-of-the-earth personalities, and determination to chart their own path and destiny.

No, 1923 doesn’t have a release date, however, the series is expected to premiere in December, according to TVLine.

Why did the Yellowstone prequel move from 1932 to 1923?

TVLine reports that the timeline change was made in order to incorporate the end of the first World War and the beginning of prohibition.

Is the Yellowstone prequel 1932 filming?

Likely not. The show is in development along with two other Yellowstone universe projects–1883: The Bass Reeves Story and 6666. The series about the legendary U.S. Marshal Bass Reeves is expected to bow later in 2022.

Will the Yellowstone prequel 1932 be a limited series?

There’s been no word on whether1932 will be a miniseries like its predecessor1883 though that’s a likely bet considering 1883: The Bass Reeves Story will have a limited run.

When discussing why1883 wouldn’t have a second season, Sheridan said the following to Deadline:

"I created this peek through time to show you this one specific journey. I’m not someone who likes to tie everything up in a bow and explain how everyone lived happily ever after, or didn’t… for me, as a storyteller it feels close-ended. I’m going to peek through the window of a different era and see what I see then."

Given the above, 1923 could also be a peek through time in the Dutton family’s history that’s meant to be a one and done.

Two of Hollywood’s heavy-hitters have attached their names to the project. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren have been tapped to star in this prequel series. Their roles have yet to be disclosed. We’ll keep you posted!
