July movies: 7 movies to watch (and 3 to skip) in July 2022
By Ricky Valero
I’ll be honest. We are coming off one of the biggest months in the history of film. We had so many movies come out in June, that we may never catch up. Below, I share a quick list featuring seven July movies to watch and three to skip, because, if we’re being honest, they’re not always worth it.
When dissecting the list of movies scheduled to come out, I try to factor in several things. First, is the movie going to be worth seeing in theaters? Going to the theaters isn’t cheap these days, and ensuring we aren’t wasting it on “what looks like” bad movies is no fun. Next, I look at what the general audience enjoys and sort through those movies. Last, I like to throw in a curveball or two that you might not know about or check out.
So for those reasons, we make the list of movies to watch and skip short, because we don’t want to waste your time. So let’s dive into the list!
New July movies to watch
Minions: The Rise of Gru – In Theaters July 1
I debated whether to add this one because every single kid (and most adults) loves them some Minions. But, honestly, this might be the biggest no-brainer of the month. Kids are going to eat this movie up and will be begging us parent’s to take them to see it.
Thor: Love and Thunder – In Theaters July 8
Phase 4 of the MCU has overall been quite lackluster. I hope that Taika Waititi, who gave us the brilliant Thor: Ragnarok, can revitalize my faith in this phase. You have the return of Natalie Portman, the MCU debut of Christian Bale, and the rest of the cast that is loaded top to bottom. I have hope.
The Gray Man – In select theaters July 15 and Netflix July 22
Speaking of an Avenger, we have Captain American and Ken from Barbie going face to face in the latest action-thriller from Netflix. The Russo Brothers are hit and miss behind the camera, but the trailer for this one looked INCREDIBLE! I am ready to check out my most anticipated movie of July. I would check local smaller theater chains as they are rolling this out in select theaters ahead of its Netflix release.
Don’t Make Me Go – On Prime Video July 15
I’m going to tell you all a little secret, I have seen Don’t Make Me Go, and it is one wild ride and the ending will have everyone talking for months, if not years. John Cho delivers again, but Mia Isaac becomes a star in front of our eyes. The duo makes this film worth checking out.
Nope – In Theaters July 22
When Jordan Peele announces a project, we are ready to be seated to check it out in theaters. NOPE looks equal parts weird, scary and insane, which is why Peele has everyone talking the moment the trailer dropped. The mystery factor behind not knowing exactly what is happening has my level of excitement through the roof.
DC: League of Super Pets – In Theaters July 29
The Rock + Kevin Hart has always been a match made in comedy heavens. Throw in John Krasinski, Kate McKinnon, and Keanu Reeves, and you even have ME excited for an animated movie. After his best friend Superman (Krasinski) is kidnapped, Krypto the Super-Dog (The Rock) has to devise a plan to save his friend.
July movies to skip
The Princess – On Hulu July 1
I love Joey King, and nobody is better when she can sink her teeth into a project. However, The Princess trailer looked downright awful. Hulu has been on an incredible run with films in 2022, but it may come to an end with this one.
Where the Crawdads Sing – In theaters July 15
I am the biggest Daisy Edgar-Jones fan and Taylor Swift fan, but my goodness, does this look like a Lifetime movie. If this is being released on a streaming platform, it 100% doesn’t make my list, but since the film is releasing in theaters, I can’t recommend people paying to see this one.
Zombie 3 – On Disney+ July 15
How would one want to watch a Zombie 3 when they didn’t know there was a Zombie 1 and 2? I had zero clue this was even a thing until doing my research, and after doing my research and watching the trailer, it still looks awful.
From our list of July movies to watch, which are you the most excited to see? Did we miss any?
