We had one heck of a run of family movies in the month of June, and July starts with  another family feature in Minions: The Rise of Gru. Is the movie worth watching in theaters? I share my thoughts, below!

The Rise of Gru is the story of a young Gru attempting to chase his dream of becoming the world’s greatest supervillain. It sees the return of Steve Carrell as Gru and the additions of Taraji P. Henson, Michelle Yeoh, and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

The movie starts slowly as we learn about Gru and his back story in becoming a super villain. But once we get the little minutia out of the way, the film has a rather fun story within it. We watch as a young Gru tries to join the Vicious 6, the baddest, coolest villains in all of the land, but when they turn him down, he must make a move to attempt to impress them into joining the squad. Gru hatches the plan to steal a necklace, but when he trusts one of the Minions to get the chain back home, things go awry.

Come for the Minions, stay for Gru’s story

Look, we all know the appeal here is to see our favorite little Minions do wild and crazy stuff to make us laugh for an hour and a half, and they do that without even trying. However, I really enjoyed the story here and thought they did a great job of giving us a backstory of how Gru became the Gru we all know and love.

Another thing that stood out were a couple of new characters we meet along the way. With the cool 1970s vibe the film gives off, it gives a chance to make even more outlandish characters, including Belle Bottom (Taraji P. Henson), who I would watch an entire movie based on how she became a super villain. She is a BLAST in this, and I loved what she brings to the film.

Also, the other new character I love is Master Chow, played by Michelle Yeoh, who is in charge of whipping the Minions into shape to fight the Vicious 6. This entire sequence is hands down the best part of this movie. It was equal parts throwing back to Yeoh’s incredible film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and an animated spoof of The Karate Kid. Yeoh steals the show in this film, and I kind of wish we got a little more from her.

Ultimately, we don’t always get movies that make the villain look cool, and these films have always done just that. From a BANGER of a soundtrack to the fun addition to the cast, Minions: The Rise of Gru is the must-see family movie of the summer. I had a blast, my family had a blast and I know you will, too.

Minions: The Rise of Gru hits theaters on Friday, July 1.
