Stranger Things season 4 volume 2: What happened to Eddie?
By Sabrina Reed
Major spoilers for Stranger Things season 4 volume 2
Stranger Things season 4 volume 2 is a beast of an end for this very ambitious season. From start to finish, it’s stressful due to the stakes being so high. Team Hawkins–Nancy, Steve, Robin, Eddie, Lucas, Dustin, and Erica–have the most to do as they are smack dab in the middle of Vecna’s killing grounds.
They, however, do come up with a plan to stop him. But, it involves using Max as bait. While Vecna is distracted with her, the older teens (plus Dustin) plan on hitting him hard with molotov cocktails and a sawed off shotgun. Talking about packing heat.
The plan also sees Dustin and Eddie playing decoys and occupying the Upside Down’s bats so that they don’t catch on to what the trio are doing in the Creel House. Set to the tune of “Master of Puppets” by Metallica, with Eddie shredding on guitar in Chrissy’s honor, a scene unfolds that’s one of the most epic and metal to ever grace our screens.
Eddie’s playing does lure the bats to his trailer as planned. As such, he and Dustin run for cover. The next step would have been to use the portal in Eddie’s living room to get back to their dimension, but Eddie changes the plan. He yanks the bed sheet so Dustin can’t decide to join him and he goes charging out of the trailer.
He does this to buy the others more time. And to keep Dustin safe, hence why he flips the mattress from under the portal as an extra measure to ensure his young friend stays in their dimension. The bats do follow Eddie as he bikes away from the trailer, but he doesn’t get too far.
Does Eddie die in Stranger Things season 4 volume 2?
Despite being knocked over by the bats in the Upside Down, Eddie still had ample time to run away. They were no longer distracted by him and instead were beginning to swarm in a cyclone pattern. But, after initially running, Eddie turns back around and decides to fight. He does what he didn’t do for Chrissy, he stands his ground. Granted, he couldn’t have helped the cheerleader anyway in volume 1, but it was a point of guilt and shame for him.
However, choosing to combat the bats, and continue to buy everyone else time, ultimately results in Eddie’s death. He couldn’t sustain his attacks against the legion. The one bright spot in his tragic demise is that he doesn’t die with no one by his side. Dustin comes back for him.
Injured and barely able to stand on his own, the younger teen makes it back to Eddie after the bats have cleared out. The two share a poignant moment where Dustin promises to look out for the new sheep at Hawkins High, Eddie repeats his refrain about this year being his and that he’ll finally graduate, and they exchange I love yous.
Let’s just say we needed more than a minute to compose ourselves after Eddie’s death.
