Last week, Tom was kidnapped. He’d managed to trick Claire into thinking she got one over on him and was in celebration mode. But, his good cheer was short lived as he was stolen away, leaving us on a cliffhanger until Tom Swift episode 6, “…And the Benefits of Bondage,” picked up where we left off.

Isaac was the first person to become aware of Tom’s absence after coming across the scene of the crime when he’d been trying to leave a message for him about his firing. He then brought Zenzi into the fold and the two consulted Barclay for next steps which led them to Rowan.

The unlikely quartet worked together to find Tom after Rowan ruled out the Road Back‘s involvement. If it wasn’t the secret society who’s been trying to ruin Tom’s life since the premiere, who did kidnap Tom? Here’s what we know!

Who kidnapped Tom Swift?

As Tom Swift is prone to do, there was quite the twist in episode 6. The person who’d kidnapped Tom was his mother, Lorraine. She’d put him through this trial to ascertain whether or not he was ready to be let in on the Tubman Group’s mission to build the Mountaintop station in space to give Black people a place in this universe safe from the influence of white supremacy.

The trial was based on the group’s principals: Invent the power your freedom requires and integrity. Tom passed with flying colors as did Zenzi, Isaac, and Rowan. Lorraine also let her son in on a piece of her life that she’d never told him.

He had a sister, Alexandria, who was born prematurely. Had Garrett, the white doctor attending Lorraine listened to her about her symptoms for gestational diabetes, Alexandria may have lived. She was a stillborn because she’d suffocated in the womb due to complications from the diabetes. The idea for the Mountaintop station was conceptualized after this event and is a reaction to the systemic racism that has hindered Black advancement and killed countless Black people.

Now that Tom is aware of this mission and will begin working on it, he and his mother have become partners in a way they haven’t been before. This is also why he told Lorraine that Barton is alive, which finally brings her into that storyline.
