House of the Dragon is the Game of Thrones prequel we definitely need. Here are all the details we know about the series so far.

If you thought Game of Thrones was the only story to come from George R.R. Martin’s world, you’d be wrong. Thanks to him creating a prequel story about the Targaryen dynasty, we’re going to get a new series. House of the Dragon is coming to HBO and HBO Max, and there isn’t much longer left to wait for it.

Of course, we’ve since had news that there’s another Game of Thrones spin-off potentially in the works. That one will be about Jon Snow, and there are debates over whether it’s needed. What we do know is that the stories of the Targaryens with their dragons definitely need to be told, so House of the Dragon is our focus right now.

House of the Dragon premiere date

We don’t have to wait too long for the new series. House of the Dragon will premiere on Sunday, Aug. 21. It will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT on HBO. If you have the app or if you have HBO Max, you will be able to watch the episode there.

This is a series that’s getting the traditional weekly release format, which is standard for HBO. Remember that HBO is a premium cable network and not a streaming site. People watch via cable so the weekly release is necessary.

The finale is set to air on Sunday, Oct. 23.

House of the Dragon cast

The show has a huge cast that will be worth watching. Doctor Who fans will get to see Matt Smith as a Targaryen we may not end up liking. After his part as the villain in Morbius, it will be fun to see him in that sort of role again.

He’ll spend a lot of time up against Emma D’Arcy, who will play Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the heir to the Iron Throne and the first female heir in Westeros.

Here’s a look at the full main cast for House of the Dragon:

  • Paddy Considine as King Viserys I Targaryen
  • Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen
  • Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen
  • Olivia Cooke as Lady Alicent Hightower
  • Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys Velaryon
  • Eve Best as Princess Rhaenys Velaryon
  • Fabien Frankel as Ser Criston Cole
  • Sonoya Mizuno as Mysaria
  • Rhys Ifans as Ser Otto Hightower

What is House of the Dragon about?

The series will follow the story called Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin. It takes place 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and is focused on the Targaryens. That means dragons!

The Targaryens faced civil war during King Viserys I’s reign. He chose his daughter to become the next heir despite Westeros never having a queen. Many believed that only men could rule, and that meant Prince Daemon Targaryen, Viserys’s brother, should be the heir to the throne. Factions develop between the two sides, and it becomes a war over who will end up being named the next monarch.

We know from Game of Thrones that Cersei Lannister was the first queen. That would suggest that Daemon wins, but how? That’s what we get to find out.

House of the Dragon trailer

We do have a teaser trailer to give us a hint of things to come. It focuses mostly on the threat of civil war due to Viserys’s decision. We’re still waiting for the full trailer.

Will House of the Dragon be a limited series?

With such a small amount of source material to work on, will we see the whole story told in just one season? The Game of Thrones prequel has not been promoted as a limited series, so there’s a good chance of it being renewed should the uptake for the series be good. We’ll have to see how the ratings go.
