Kung Fu season 3 is coming earlier than some fans might realize. Though the series was a midseason release for its first two seasons, it’s been moved to The CW’s fall line-up for the 2022-2023 television season. This likely has to do with a lack of superhero television, with exception to Stargirl which will make its fall debut Aug. 31, on the network until 2023.

Traditionally, The CW’s fall premieres have included The Flash, Batwoman, and Legends of Tomorrow. But, with The Flash being held until the midseason and the latter two Arrowverse shows being cancelled, there’s a need for action dramas to help support the fall line-up. Hence Kung Fu‘s new slot which pairs better with Professionals, the Walker franchise, and The Winchesters than say Riverdale.

Though we’re less than three months out from the season 3 premiere, and information is still coming in on what to expect, we can tell you what we know so far. Here are all the details about Kung Fu‘s upcoming new season!

Kung Fu season 3 release date

The third season will premiere on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 9 p.m. ET on The CW after a new episode of Stargirl season 3.

JB Tadena has been promoted to a series regular for season 3 and will reprise his role as Sebastian. Also, fans can expect Yvonne Chapman to return as Zhilan despite the character’s death in the season 2 finale.

TVLine reports, she’ll remain a series regular on Kung Fu in its third season. Co-showrunner Bob Berens had the following to say about Chapman’s involvement in season 3:

"It was never even a question for us that we’d be asking the incredible Yvonne Chapman back to the show. Zhilan’s dramatic sacrifice in the Season 2 finale creates an exciting new beginning for her character, and we can”t wait for viewers to see what we’ve got planned for her."

Kung Fu season 3 plot details

We left Kung Fu in a state of transition. Henry decided to learn more about his father after the man died in his arms. It’s a journey that necessitated an end to his relationship with Nicky despite the two being split by life and circumstances and not a loss of love and care for one another.

Zhilan’s death clearly isn’t the end for her considering Chapman will be in season 3, however, the way in which this is possible is certain to affect the plot. Not to mention, magic has been introduced into the world which has brought Nicky’s shifu Pei-Ling, or Xiao, or possibly someone else into this realm.

So, while we don’t have an official synopsis for the third season, we do know things are certain to heat up once again given what happened in the season 2 finale. We’ll keep you posted as more information comes in about the new season.
