What is psychological thriller Surface on Apple TV+ about?

Psychological thrillers are always so captivating. For those who like a good mystery, you spend the length of a movie or television show trying to figure out the answers yourself. Apple TV+ has a new limited series coming our way in this very genre, Surface!

The new show was created by Veronica West, who is known for developing the Hulu series High Fidelity starring Zoë Kravitz. The new miniseries was produced by Apple Studios and Hello Sunshine, which was founded by actress Reese Witherspoon. She serves as an executive director on Surface. Sam Miller, Kevin Sullivan, and Jennifer Morrison are among those who took on directing duties.

Actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw stars as leading lady, Sophie. You may recognize her from her role as Hannah Shoenfeld in The Morning Show. Also rounding out the cast are Oliver Jackson-Cohen as Sophie’s husband James, Stephan James as Baden, Ari Graynor as Caroline, Marianne Jean-Baptiste as Hannah, François Arnaud as Harrison, and Millie Brady as Eliza.

The eight-episode season is set to make its debut on July 29 with the first three episodes, followed by one new episode weekly until the finale on Sept. 2. We know when the new show is coming and who stars in it. But what is it all about?

What is Surface on Apple TV+ about?

According to Apple TV+, Surface is set in high-end San Francisco. Sophie is a woman who has suffered a traumatic head injury that has left her with extreme memory loss. This is believed to have been caused by a suicide attempt. As she goes on a journey to put the missing pieces of her life back together with the help of her husband and friends, she begins to question whether or not what she’s being told is actually the truth.

Through twists and turns and a love triangle, the thriller asks: what if you woke up one day and didn’t know your own secrets? Based on the trailer, it seems like perhaps Sophie wasn’t attempting suicide. Rather it may have been her husband who pushed her off the ferry. The series is a story of self-discovery that contemplates whether we’re pre-programmed to become who we are, or if we choose our own identity.

Surface premieres Friday, July 29 on Apple TV+ with the first three episodes.
