Emmys 2022: The Selena Gomez disrespect needs to stop
By Sandy C.
The 74th Emmy nominations have been announced and we were all ears hoping to hear Selena Gomez’s name as a nominee for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Only Murders in the Building on Hulu. Unfortunately, Selena Gomez was, once again, snubbed. But our girl is still making history with a nominee as a producer for the Hulu series. Here’s why it’s so important (and why the Emmys need to recognize Gomez a whole lot more).
While Selena Gomez’s two Only Murders co-stars, Steve Martin and Martin Short, enjoyed being nominated for Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, the third in the trio is noticeably absent from the category. What gives?
The Selena Gomez disrespect needs to stop
Don’t get me wrong Martin and Short are incredible in their roles. There is never a dull moment when the two are on the screen. However, I would argue that Gomez’s character, Mabel, is the heart of the group. She’s the glue keeping them together. Fans love Mabel’s attitude and sassiness. She’s loving and caring, but she won’t for a second put up with anyone who doesn’t deserve it. And did we mention Mabel is super loyal? Selena Gomez pulls off these characteristics wonderfully and it needs to be recognized.
A nomination for Lead Actress would also mean so much to the Latina community. Stars nominated in this category, are: Rachel Brosnahan, Quinta Brunson, Kaley Cuoco, Elle Fanning, Issa Rae, and Jean Smart.
How Selena Gomez made history with Emmy nom
As Variety reports, being included as a producer in the category marks only the second time a Latina has ever been nominated for producing a comedy series in the 74-year Emmy history. What a shame! The first Latina nominee was Salma Hayek for Ugly Betty in 2007.
We have hope, though! Only Murders in the Building season 2 is streaming on Hulu, so there is still a chance Gomez will be nominated next year. Fingers crossed! In the meantime, stream Only Murders!
