So You Think You Can Dance season 17 Top 6: Who went home?
By Sabrina Reed
So You Think You Can Dance season 17 episode 8, “Back in Time,” felt like it was on skates at the beginning, slow in the middle, and then once again on skates by the end. The pacing of this season has been all over the place, but it may have been at its worst this episode.
In any case, the dancers transported us to the ’50s, ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s as the Top 8 vied a spot for another week in the competition. Unfortunately, all but one pair had missteps at this critical point in the season. Thankfully, the addition of solo routines helped to balance things out for some of the dancers. Though I must note that Beau, Alexis, and Essence made the best use of the short amount of time at their disposal.
How did the dancers fare this episode? Here’s what we know!
So You Think You Can Dance season 17 Top 6
New partners
- Ralyn and Beau – ’50s jazz
- Essence and Keaton – ’70s disco
- Anna and Waverly – ’80s jazz
- Alexis and Carter – ’90s contemporary
Waverly, Ralyn, Anna, and Beau ended up in the bottom four. Waverly and Anna’s jazz performance lacked the staccato and sharpness that defined ’80s dance moves. While their character work was on point as usual, their routine didn’t hit the mark for the judges.
Ralyn and Beau simply didn’t connect as partners. Their jazz routine was supposed to embody a reunion between lovers, but their chemistry was lacking. In deliberation, the judges weren’t unanimous in their decision, but a choice still had to be made. They chose to save Ralyn and Beau, sending Anna and Waverly home.

Next week the contestants will be dancing alongside So You Think You Can Dance All-Stars. It should be an interesting episode.
