The second part of Flowers in the Attic: The Origin put Olivia in control of Foxworth Hall…or at least gave her some semblance of control. But, as it’s become clear in this series, there’s no such thing as control. Both Olivia and Malcolm think they have it, but they both act on impulse. And, for Olivia that turned into establishing a weird, still very much toxic, alliance with her husband in order to ensure they could keep Alicia’s baby.

Spoilers ahead of Flowers in the Attic: The Origin part 2

The poor widow had initially agreed to being locked in east wing of the house, in “Part 2: The Mother,” to keep her safe from Malcolm and protect the Foxworth name. However, Olivia at first failed to protect her which led to her convincing Alicia to cut her hair to deter Malcolm’s attacks. Then, as months went by, Alicia began to catch on to how much Olivia wanted another child. So much so that Olivia allowed Christopher to start calling her mom, which crossed the line.

Alicia made an escape attempt after she and Olivia got into an altercation. It resulted in Olivia calling for Malcolm to help her keep Alicia from leaving the house. When he did, the push and pull between Alicia and Malcolm caused Alicia to take a tumble down the steps. Thankfully, Alicia didn’t die and neither did her baby, but it put her in a vulnerable position.

Olivia convinced Dr. Curtis that Alicia was delusional and that she was having the child of a man she’d sought in her grief. This was to cover up Malcolm raping his step mother. After being subdued by the doctor due to a sedative, and some advice from Nella, Alicia spent the rest of her pregnancy biding her time so she could leave.

Her near death wasn’t the only one that had us on the edge of our seats. Malcolm was nearly laid low by poison. His daughter, Corrine, slipped him poison as a means of getting out from under his control so she could go see her friends. He’d forbidden her from leaving the grounds because she’d gone to a party he’d told her she couldn’t go to, wound up pregnant by the boy she’d been seeing, and had an abortion.

Corrine’s intent was to make her father sick not kill him. Unfortunately, however, Malcolm wasn’t the only person in the young woman’s life who was exposed to the poison.

There’s only one character who died in Flowers in the Attic: The Origin and that’s Mal Foxworth, Olivia and Malcolm’s first born. When the series jumped forward in time, he was in his early 20s and engaged to be married to a young woman named Helen.

Mal’s soon-to-be bride comes from wealth, and he wanted to provide her with the lifestyle she was accustomed to even though she’d assured him that she only wanted him and whatever life they could forge together. For the whole of the back half of part 2, Mal tried to convince Malcolm to sign over his trust fund early, but his father refused.

Even when Mal tried to blackmail Malcolm by telling him he knew Nella’s daughter, Celia, was his, his father didn’t budge. Instead, he forced the issue by telling Olivia what Mal tried to do and owned up to Celia being his child. To say Malcolm is the devil, is an understatement.

Persistent as ever to hurt his son, Malcolm also made a play for Helen on their wedding day. He explained to her that he makes the rules in the Foxworth family, and if she wanted Mal to get what he wanted, she’d need to obey him and his rules. It led to the two kissing. Unbeknownst to them, Mal caught them. But, he didn’t barge in or interrupt them.

Instead, Mal charged off to Corrine’s room looking for her. He found what he thought was her stash of weed and went to fetch his car. When Corrine caught him outside, he was smoking. She got into the car with him and then things went horribly wrong. It took a moment, but she caught on to the fact that he was smoking the poisonous plants she’d picked earlier in the episode.

Horrified, Corrine was left with no time to help her brother. The poison had entered his bloodstream and once he reacted to it, the car went veering into a tree. Mal was dead by the time his family, his would be bride, and their guests made it to the wreckage.

It was a tragic ending for a character who simply wanted to get as far away from Foxworth Hall as his mother wished for him to do.
