Will the Residency Program return in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19?
New casting announcements for Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 hint that the Residency Program is returning. Is that possible with the way things ended for it?
Grey’s Anatomy Season 18 brought us a hard blow at the end. After trying to reinvent the Residency Program, Webber learned the hard way that it wasn’t the best option. Poor Schmidt broke when he lost a patient and it looked like he wouldn’t return to work at one point.
In the end, it wasn’t really the program that was a problem. It was the lack of doctors. The Residency Program was shut down, and we watched a s Schmidt, Helm, and the other residents packed their bags for (presumably) new hospitals.
Of course, that doesn’t stop us from hoping that the Residency Program will be back and our favorite residents will return. New casting hints that this is possible.
Three new surgical residents cast in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19
So far, there have been three new faces added to the series. The first was Alexis Floyd from Inventing Anna. She will play Simone Griffin, who is described as being high-achieving, whip-smart, and funny. While she has grown up in Seattle, she didn’t want to work at Grey Sloan Memorial. There is a painful history there. Who did she lose, and which doctor is she going to blame?
Next was The Thing About Harry star Niko Terho. Yes, he has already shared screen time with Jake Borelli, and we’re hoping to see that again in Grey’s Anatomy Season 19. He will play Lucas Adams, who is described as being the “charming black sheep” of the family. He has a great mind, but his grades don’t match it. He needs to prove himself as a surgeon to follow in the footsteps of the rest of his family.
Most recently, Midori Francis has been tapped to play Mika Yasuda, another first-year surgical resident. She’s the middle child of nine(!) and is often overlooked and underestimated. Of course, she’s learned to use that to her advantage. She is dealing with the overwhelming struggle of student loans, but she’s also scrappy and pushes herself to make it into the program.
With all this, it certainly sounds like the Residency Program is coming back. Maybe Meredith is sticking around and will become Chief of Surgery, which will help to bring in more doctors to the hospital and get the program back up and running.
Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 premieres on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 9/8c on ABC.
