Ahead of The Walking Dead Season 11C premiere, the cast and creators of the show united at San Diego Comic-Con to reflect on the series and tease what fans can expect in the final batch of episodes. With The Walking Dead ending, there are several spin-off shows coming soon — but what does that mean for the ending of the main show?

Creators of The Walking Dead were asked whether the addition of the spin-off shows had an affect on the way the series finale was written, and we were glad to learn that the finale episode was not altered to set-up additional spin-off stories. Creators also teased that they were focused on creating a satisfying ending for the series’ loyal fans.

The chief content officer of The Walking Dead universe Scott M. Gimple confirmed that “the finale is about completing The Walking Dead story, not setting up spin-offs.” He added that “there’s room for those spin offs” because of the story, but that The Walking Dead finale “concludes the story of this 11 years.”

Executive Producer and Showrunner Angela Kang spoke on wanting to have a satisfying closure to the series. “The goal is that even if there were no spin offs, it would feel like there is a closure to the show itself because the show itself needs its own ending,” she confirmed. Even though there will be closure, Kang hinted that not everything will be perfectly wrapped up. “Doors are left open as they so often are in life and as they were even in the ending of the comic,” she explained.

Director Greg Nicotero echoed the same sentiment, going on to say that he’s filmed moments with each of the main actors for the series finale to serve their characters’ journeys. “Historical relevance of a show is judged on the last episode,” Nicotero said. “We really struggled and agonized and buckled-in to make sure that it served the fans of the show.”
