Musician biopics have certainly become a popular offering for movie-goers in recent years, intermixed between the superheroes and bouncy animated features. Bohemian Rhapsody seemed to start the trend in 2018, earning a lot of fanfare at the Oscars the following year. Then, there was Rocketman in 2019, which established the pattern. After Freddie Mercury and Elton John, what meteoric super star would be next? Surprisingly, Weird Al Yankovic. Here’s what we know so far about Weird: The Al Yankovic.

Weird: The Al Yankovic story synopsis

Just like the famous songs developed in his over 40 year career, Weird Al’s upcoming autobiographical film, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, has seemingly timed itself to stand as a parody of its popular contemporaries. Like the aforementioned films, it will follow the humble and no doubt humorous beginnings of the accordion master Weird Al.

Remember back when he rocked that killer mustache? As rags-to-riches stories require, the film will focus on his early career, when he authored such parody-legend hits like “Another One Rides the Bus” and “Like a Surgeon”

Weird: The Al Yankovic Story release date

Since being teased in a short trailer released back in May, not much new info has come out. The end of the teaser states that Weird: The Al Yankovic Story will have a Fall release, and as of right now, neither Weird Al or Roku have confirmed a more specific date.

Weird: The Al Yankovic confirmed cast and crew

As you might expect, Weird Al is credited as a co-writer on the film, partnering with Funny or Die alumni Eric Appel, who is the fellow co-writer as well as director. Beyond a well-worked background in directing comedy shows, Appel also made the original 3 minute short which, one would assume, was the seed idea for this film.

Playing the role of Weird Al for the picture is Daniel Radcliffe, and early images of him in the film goes to show that a mustache and perm would be a huge improvement on anyone. The film also features Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, whoever that is.

With a release window of fall, and with fall soon approaching, it is only a matter of time before we know when Weird Al, hands down the most famous rider of a unicycle, will be appearing on Roku.
