We are entering another month and we have a ton of new movies that are set to come out. Below, I share a quick list featuring six August movies to watch and four to skip, because, if we’re being honest, they’re not always worth it.

Most in the industry call August the second January. A month where studios dump films that they know aren’t going to make a ton of money or films that they had high hopes for and know aren’t going to shatter box office numbers. One thing they do have going for some of these films is that there hasn’t been an “adult release” in theaters since Nope in Mid-July, so that can bod well for the likes of Bullet Train to kick off the month.

Our goal with these lists is to not waste your time on films that might not check the boxes. So for that reason, we make the list of movies to watch and skip short, because we don’t want to waste your time. So let’s dive into the list!

New August movies to watch

Bodies Bodies Bodies – In Theaters August 5

A24 rarely misses and they continue their run with Bodies Bodies Bodies which has been universally praised since its debut at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. The film has an incredible cast led by Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott and Pete Davidson. It’s about a group of 20-something who plan a hurricane party at a family mansion. I am beyond ready to catch this one.

Bullet Train – In Theaters August 5

With a strong cast, wild story and a director that knows how to direct an action movie, Bullet Train looks like it could be the late summer blockbuster we all need to check out. I fully expect this to be a no-nonsense-style action movie that is easy and fun to watch in the theaters.

Emily the Criminal – In Theaters August 12

I love getting to highlight films that might not be on your radar that I have already seen. I caught Emily the Criminal at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival and had a blast with it. Aubrey Plaza is a straight badass throughout the entire movie and while it has its issues, it is a good time.

Fall – In Theaters August 12

I watched the Fall recently and was blown away by the film. It isn’t anything new to this genre per se, but the direction, acting and the edge-of-your-seat thrill ride you go on throughout the film are NUTS. I was freaking out throughout the entire second and third acts watching this film. I can only imagine how amazing it would play on a big screen.

Day Shift – On Netflix August 12 and Me Time – On Netflix August 26

On the one hand, you have Vampires and Jamie Foxx; on the other, you have Kevin Hart and Mark Wahlberg. Netflix is hitting a HOMERUN in the month of August with some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. I mentioned earlier that studios dump films this month and Netflix understands that and is taking advantage of it by bringing out these two movies. Both are going to be on my radar the day they release and they should be yours too.

August movies to skip

Easter Sunday – In Theaters August 5

Look, a movie called Easter Sunday not coming out on Easter Sunday is the wildest thing I have ever heard of. That’s strike one. Strike two is the trailer as it doesn’t look funny at all, and strike three is the fact it is releasing in theaters when it probably should’ve been relegated to a streaming platform.

Secret Headquarters – On Paramount+ August 12

Nobody loves Owen Wilson more than I do, but my goodness, what in the world was he thinking when he took on this role? I want more of Marry Me Owen Wilson than over-the-top kid’s movie Owen Wilson.

Look Both Ways – On Netflix August 17

On the surface, Look Both Ways can be either really fun or really bad. I am leaning toward the latter, especially with two other big Netflix releases on our watch list. Come back later and yell at us if this one turns out to be good.

The Invitation – In Theaters August 26

Horror movies are either hits or miss and The Invitation doesn’t look like anything that will blow our minds. I love Nathalie Emmanuel, but this looks like a movie we have seen hundreds of times before and the fact that it’s hitting theaters makes it even easier to skip or even wait until it hits DVD.

From our list of August movies to watch, which are you the most excited to see? Did we miss any?
