The month of August kicks off with no shortage of films releasing in theaters and streaming. Today, I review Prey, the newest entry to the Predator franchise set to hit Hulu on Friday. Is it worth checking out? Let’s dive in.

Prey is set in Comanche Nation 300 years ago. It’s the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior raised in the shadows. When danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people.

Let me start by saying this film had an incredibly slow build that I am not sure was written well enough for us to invest in these characters early on. We know Naru is a rebel who wants to fight, but her family doesn’t allow that to happen. At the same time, they do a good job of introducing us to Naru (Amber Midthunder) but struggle to connect the dots with a story that has any meaningful value.

However, there is a shift in the film around the halfway mark when we first focus on the “Predator-like” character. The action sequence when we first meet this character is VICIOUS, brutal, and I loved every moment of it.

Prey is a must watch action-packed thriller

Throughout this movie, we are treated to great fight sequences that will hold up as some of the best of the year. I’ve heard talks about how this film should have been released in theaters and they’re not wrong.

Prey is carried on the back of Amber Midthunder, who, if I was willing to bet, will become a MASSIVE star after this film releases. She was incredible in every aspect of this role, including kicking ass and taking names. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this actress.

Overall, Prey overcomes its slow start to become a must-see movie of the month. From the fantastic fight sequences to a great score to the performance Midthunder, you are all in for a real treat this weekend.
