With news that Ellen Pompeo is scaling back her time on Grey’s Anatomy, it’s led to the question of the show’s end. Is Season 19 going to be the last?

Every season there are questions about whether Grey’s Anatomy is going to come to an end. That’s the case with any show that goes on as long as this one has. It’s rare for a scripted show to get almost two decades on TV now.

There has always been one factor on the future of the show: Ellen Pompeo. As long as she signed on for more seasons, the show would go on. Pompeo knew that, which was why she would sign on. She didn’t want to see 300 people to lose their jobs because of her decision.

Yet, Deadline reports Pompeo is going to scale back her time on the series in Season 19. She’ll be in eight of the 22 planned episodes. What does that mean for the future of the series?

Grey’s Anatomy Season 19 isn’t confirmed as the last…yet

We need to point out that while Pompeo has announced she’s scaling back her appearances, there hasn’t been anything from ABC about the medical drama coming to an end. Season 19 is not being billed as a final season.

Of course, that’s “not yet.” There is always a chance that the writers are looking at a way to bring the show to an end. However, I get a sense that the medical drama is doing something similar to NCIS last year.

Mark Harmon decided to scale back his appearances. It led to questions about whether NCIS would end because we couldn’t see a series without Gibbs. And then the ratings didn’t take the turn for the worse that we feared. The show was renewed because it did turn out that the other cast members, and Gary Cole coming in as a very different character to Gibbs, worked to carry the series.

Pompeo stepping back could be a way to see if the medical drama could continue. This show is now about far more than Meredith Grey. We have a lot of fresh blood coming in, and it (along with the current cast) could be all that’s needed to keep the medical drama going.
