Avatar: The Way of Water: When is the new Avatar movie coming out?

To say it’s been a long wait for the next Avatar movie would be an understatement! Fans of the science fiction film, released in December 2009, have been waiting more than 10 years for the next part of the epic story.

Per the logline, Avatar: The Way of Water (aka Avatar 2) will take us back to Pandora where Jake Sully lives with his family – Neytiri and their kids. Jake must work with Neytiri and the army of the Na’vi when trouble arises in a race to protect their planet from a familiar threat who has returned. We’ll see the lengths they’ll go to keep each other safe, the battles they have to fight to stay alive, and the tragedies they endure.

The talented James Cameron is back to direct the highly-anticipated sequel, which we’ll be getting later this year! So when exactly is the film’s release date?

When is the new Avatar movie coming out?

Avatar 2 will (finally!) make its way to the big screens on Friday, Dec. 16, 2022. The first film came out Dec. 18, 2009. So by the time the winter months are here, it will have been 13 years since we first saw this mesmerizing story. The highly-anticipated film faced eight theatrical delays, but the time to see it is finally coming!

Reprising their roles are actors Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Joel David Moore, Dileep Rao, CCH Pounder, and Matt Gerald. We’ve also got two new exciting additions – Kate Winslet and Vin Diesel!

There’s also three other sequels currently in the works, which are supposed to be released Dec. 20, 2024, Dec. 18, 2026, and Dec. 22, 2028 respectively. Though in a recent interview with Total Film, Cameron said that is the second film doesn’t do well, work would just be done to produce a third.
