What is new drama series Black Cake on Hulu about?

New drama series Black Cake is in the works at Hulu. The show comes from Kapital Enertainment and Oprah Winfrey’s Harpo Films, according to Deadline.

The show was written by showrunner Marissa Jo Cerar .The news outlet reports the drama stars Mia Isaac, Lashay Anderson, Faith Alabi, Ahmed Elhaj, Glynn Turman, Sonita Henry, Adrienne Warren, and Ashley Thomas.

A release date has not been announced yet. But we do have some details on what to expect from the series!

What is Black Cake on Hulu about?

Black Cake is based on the book by author Charmaine Wilkerson of the same name. The series takes place in multiple cities like Jamaica, Rome, and Southern California, and takes place over a number of years.

According to Deadline, a runaway bride named Covey disappeared into the surf off the coast of Jamaica in the late 1960s. She’s feared to have drowned or become a fugitive on the run for her husband’s murder.

In California 50 years later, a widow in her 60s loses her battle with cancer. Eleanor Bennett leaves her two estranged kids a flash drive that has previously untold stories of her journey from the Caribbean to America. The Eleanor-narrated stories shock her children and challenge what they know about their family’s origin, Deadline reports.

  •  Mia Isaac as Covey, a fierce biracial teenager growing up in Jamaica in the late 1960s. She’s the star swimmer in her community and plans to user her talents around the world. But that’s threatened when her overprotective father begins to meddle in her personal life. The teen is forced to choose between her family and herself, and spends the rest of her life facing the consequences.
  • Lashay Anderson as Bunny Pringle, Covey’s best friend in Jamaica
  • Faith Alabi as Pearl Thomas, a loveable caretaker for the Lyncook household who is devoted a young Covey due to a secret pact she made with her mother, Mathilda, who vanished years prior.
  •  Ahmed Elhaj as Gibbs Grant who falls hard for Covey. As the two encounter obstacles, his love for her is put to the ultimate test.
  • Glynn Turman as Charles Mitch, a successful lawyer in California whose priority is to honor the final wishes of his friend and client, Eleanor Bennett.
  • Adrienne Warren as Benny Bennet, an artist who loves with her whole heart, but she’s been kept estranged form her family for eight years. When her brother calls her to come home to listen to message from their late mom, she’s forced to face the ghosts from her past.
  • Ashley Thomas as Byron Bennett, a brilliant ocean scientist. In the wake of his mother’s death, he’s tasked with carrying out her final wish, which forces a reunion between him and his sister Benny.
  • Sonita Henry as Mabel Martin, well renowned food expert who enjoys a quiet life with her son and parents. But her world is upended by a shattering revelation that questions what she believed about her family.
