Although Gunther wasn’t an official part of the six main friend group members in Friends, he’ll always have a special place in fans’ hearts. That’s why when the actor who portrayed him, James Michael Tyler, passed away in 2021, sadness was felt around the world. Gunther appears in a significant amount of episodes, making him one of the more important secondary characters.

Gunther is a recurring character in Friends, best known as the manager of the iconic coffee shop Central Perk. In addition to serving up coffee, an ongoing storyline for Gunther is his crush on Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) which is largely keeps to himself. His unrequited love leads to many awkward interactions and ongoing jokes. He doesn’t appear on the show as often as the six main characters, but he still serves as an important thread throughout the series.

Gunther is also a favorite amongst many for his quirky moments and memorable lines that fans find very endearing. His inability to express his feelings for Rachel certainly resonates with viewers and this bittersweet part of his personality makes him all the more complex. Fans love the episodes he appears in.

Unfortunately, James Michael Tyler passed away after a battle with stage 4 prostate cancer in October 2021. The actor was very open with his diagnosis and spoke about his health after the Friends reunion special earlier that year, explaining why he wasn’t able to make the taping. Tyler appeared in a whopping 150 episodes of Friends, making him an undeniable staple of the beloved sitcom.
