A new film set in the 60s starring Elizabeth Banks is coming to theaters this fall. Call Jane is based on true events of a real-life underground abortion service that operated at the time in Chicago.

The Jane Collective, or Jane, was officially known as the Abortion Counseling Service of Women’s Liberation. The group ran from around 1969 to 1973 during the time abortion was illegal in most of the United States. Unfortunately, the film is very timely as Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022, meaning there is no more constitutional right to abortion and each state now has the power to make their own rules/laws regarding abortion.

Banks portrays Joy, and the movie also stars Sigourney Weaver as Virginia, Chris Messina as Will, Kate Mara as Lana, Wunmi Mosaku as Gwen, and Cory Michael Smith as Dean.

Directed by Phyllis Nagy, the film first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year in January. Haley Schore and Roshan Sethi serve as writers.

Call Jane release date

Call Jane comes from production company, Roadside Attractions. The upcoming film will be released only in theaters on Friday, Oct. 28. It still isn’t known whether it will come to streaming at some point.

What is Call Jane starring Elizabeth Banks about?

Set in Chicago 1968, suburban housewife Joy leads an ordinary life with her husband and daughter. When she finds herself pregnant, it leads to a life-threatening heart condition. When she meets with a board of all-male doctors, they all vote not to terminate her pregnancy to save her life.

Looking for a solution, she’s led to Virginia, an independent visionary fiercely committed to women’s health, and Gwen who is an activist who dreams of a day when all women will have access to abortion regardless of their ability to pay. Inspired by their work, Joy decides to join their group, putting every aspect of her life on the line.

The trailer shows the established operation, how they help those who need to safely get an abortion, and some of the cases that come their way. Some examples are an 11-year old, a woman who has cancer, and another who finds herself pregnant after being raped.

In real life, seven of the group’s members were arrested after police raided one of their apartments. Their attorney was able to delay court proceedings, each charged with a prison sentence of 110 years, as the Supreme Court was set to decide on Roe v. Wade. When abortion was made legal in 1973, their charges were dropped and the group disbanded.

Call Jane will make its theatrical release Friday, Oct. 28.
